What Are Snap-On Implant Dentures?
Implant-supported overdentures – commonly called snap-on dentures – are removable dentures that attach to 2–4 dental implants using precision locator attachments or ball-and-socket mechanisms. Unlike traditional dentures that rely on suction and adhesive, snap-on dentures are mechanically anchored. They will not slip, shift, or fall out while eating or speaking.
This option bridges the gap between conventional dentures (uncomfortable, unstable, unreliable) and a full fixed implant arch (higher investment). For patients already wearing dentures who want dramatically improved stability, snap-on dentures are often the most accessible entry point into implant dentistry.
Patients throughout the Memphis area – from Bartlett and Cordova to Germantown and Collierville – are discovering that this relatively straightforward procedure changes their relationship with eating, speaking, and socializing entirely.

The Procedure
Evaluation & 3D Imaging
A CBCT scan assesses bone volume and anatomy. For most snap-on denture candidates, only 2–4 implants are needed, meaning the bone requirements are far less demanding than a full fixed arch.
Implant Placement Surgery
The implants are placed in a minor outpatient procedure, typically under local anesthesia with optional oral or IV sedation. The procedure is significantly shorter and less involved than full-arch surgery.
Healing (6–12 Weeks)
The implants integrate with the bone. During this period, your existing or temporary denture can still be worn, though it will need to be adjusted to avoid pressure on the healing sites.
Attachment & Fitting
Once healed, the locator attachments are incorporated into the underside of your denture. The denture is then snapped onto the implants, adjusted for fit and bite, and you leave with a dramatically more stable restoration.
Pros & Considerations
Advantages
- Vastly more stable than traditional dentures
- No adhesives or overnight soaking of the implants
- Lower cost than full fixed arch
- Patient removes denture for cleaning nightly
- Implants preserve underlying bone
- Good candidacy even with some bone loss
Considerations
- Still removable - not a fixed solution
- Attachments wear and need periodic replacement (every 1–2 years)
- Covers gum tissue - some palate coverage maintained
- Bone under denture base still slowly resorbs over time
- Less bite force than fixed All-on-4
Cost Range - Memphis Area
$5,000 – $10,000
$10,000 – $18,000

Is This Right for You?
Snap-on dentures are ideal for current denture wearers who are frustrated with instability, patients who want implant-level security without full fixed-arch investment, and those with moderate bone loss who may not be ideal full-arch candidates without grafting. A consultation with Dr. Adatrow will clarify exactly what your bone anatomy supports.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my existing denture with snap-on implants?
Often yes, if the existing denture is in good condition and fits properly. Dr. Adatrow will evaluate whether your current denture can be retrofitted with locator attachments or whether a new denture is indicated. A new denture designed specifically for implant retention will generally provide a better long-term fit.
How often do the snap attachments need replacing?
The nylon inserts within the locator attachments typically need replacing every 12–24 months depending on wear. This is a quick, inexpensive in-office procedure — far less involved than replacing the denture itself. The implants beneath do not require replacement.
Is a 2-implant or 4-implant overdenture better?
Four implants provide more retention and stability, and are particularly recommended for the upper arch where the denture must counteract more dislodging forces. Two implants work well for most lower dentures. Dr. Adatrow will recommend the number based on your bone anatomy, jaw forces, and restoration goals.
