What Is an Implant-Supported Bridge?

An implant-supported bridge replaces 2–4 consecutive missing teeth using two dental implants as anchors, with one or more "pontic" (artificial) teeth suspended between them. The entire structure is fixed — it does not come in or out. It is cemented or screwed in place and functions exactly like natural teeth.

The critical distinction from a traditional bridge: no healthy teeth are ground down. A conventional tooth-supported bridge requires filing the two natural teeth on either side of the gap down to stubs to serve as anchors — permanently damaging perfectly healthy structure. An implant bridge eliminates this sacrifice entirely, making it the far superior long-term solution for adjacent missing teeth.

Implant Bridge vs. Traditional Bridge - Why It Matters

When a dentist prepares healthy teeth as bridge anchors, those teeth become permanently compromised. They are now covered crowns — more vulnerable to decay around the margins, more likely to eventually need root canals, and if they fail years later, you've lost two additional teeth instead of one. Studies show conventional bridges have a 30% failure rate within 15 years when the abutment teeth develop problems.

An implant bridge has no healthy teeth to compromise. The anchors are titanium posts in bone. They don't decay. They don't need root canals. And if the crown on top ever needs replacing, the underlying implant remains healthy and intact.

The Procedure

CBCT imaging assesses bone at the two implant sites. Bone grafting may be needed if the gap has been present for some time and resorption has occurred.

Two implants are placed at the ends of the gap under local anesthesia with optional sedation. Healing abutments are placed on top. Adjacent healthy teeth are not touched.

The implants fuse with bone. A temporary restoration may be provided for aesthetics and function during this healing phase.

Impressions or digital scans capture the implant positions. A custom bridge is fabricated and delivered — fixed into place. The result is indistinguishable from natural teeth in function and appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, but you'll need special tools to clean under the pontic - floss threaders, super floss, interdental brushes, or a water flosser (Waterpik). Dr. Adatrow's team will provide detailed cleaning instructions and ensure you're confident in your hygiene routine before you leave.

For a single missing tooth, a single tooth implant is almost always the better choice. It is entirely independent, preserves bone, doesn't involve adjacent teeth, and typically lasts longer. An implant bridge is most advantageous when replacing 2 or more adjacent missing teeth.
